October 2016 /r/pics transparency report - Halloween contest winners, title policies, and more!

How I always seem to end up in an airport while writing these things is simply beyond. Luckily my shillbux also include a lot of bonus miles, so it works out.Anyways, the month of October is always an interesting one at /r/pics – for some, it’s the best time of the year. For others, the worst. This time around we did not offer any filtering, we simply directed any users to consider posting in our contest alongside or instead of in the main subreddit. This was impressively effective in terms of the contest, but not so much for reducing traffic of the subreddit. Next time we hope to have our flair filtering expended a bit farther, but a year from now is a long time, so we will get there when we get there.Anyways, lets chat about the month.Halloween ContestWe recieved over 500 entries in our halloween contest, making it the largest /r/pics contest ever. Lots of great submissions, and it was really hard to choose. I have to fully credit our creative director, /u/tragopanic and her assistant /u/lessons_learnt for putting together a great contest along with some great prizes. AlsoashoutouttoourCOOmeforgivingeveryoneofficialtitles.Lucky winners recieved / will soon receive:Special /r/pics flairA special, really amazing, exclusive /r/pics magnet set that we had to beg and plead the reddit licensing team to let us give away.Third thing (Reddit gold)The winners were:Amazon Prime costume by caronarnoldMonster house by tsharp3dCamouflage by PleaseSayPizzaBill Murray group costume by aubra_cadabraThe Peculiar Twins by erncubInside Out family by CamBlamSlamIn terms of contests, we were glad this one was able to be so successful. This gives us high hopes for trying more in the future, and with the holidays right around the corner, we have a few ideas up our sleeve.TitlesRecently, we ran a 7 day trial on some more limited title guidelines. We are currently in the voting phase of the possible future of these rules. I have no more details than this, but if we decide to go for it, you will hear more by the end of November.Finalizing moderator activity reqsI don't really have any public details for this, but we have finalized and implemented a new moderator activity policy, which is just a great thing :)And, well, as far as I know, that was really it. If you didn't see it already, please check out our analysis on bans in /r/pics, you can read it hereStatsCategoryDataDifferenceCommentTotal Actions42493Up ~ 7000This was a very, very busy month for us, especially automod. There are multiple factors contributing to this factor, looking at it from a small investigation - This month it mostly comes down to automod - Basically, /r/pics has restrictions on new accounts. We are not a subreddit that outright bans new users from using our subreddit, however posts from new users requires moderator approval. This process is completely automated and requires nothing for the user, it just means they won't see their post in /new for a few minutes. A moderator comes by, checks for rules and other checks to make sure the account is not malicious. If these checks pass, the post is approved and the user is good to go. Doing this is extremely effective at stopping spam, and a necessary evil for a subreddit this size. Keeping this in mind, what brings new users in the most? Holidays and halloween of course, because everyone has a picture to post, users are creating new accounts, and their posts are getting approved after being filtered out. Combine this with slightly increased spam, and numbers shoot up by 7kSubmission Removals15620Up ~ 3000Most of this extra lifting was AutoMod checking new usersComment Removals10710Up ~ 2000As for the comments, this was a more diverse increase. Along with halloween comes a lot of unsavory comments. /r/pics does have basic commenting guidelines and these were enforced.Posts Approved3720Up ~ 400If so many submissions were removed, how was there such a smaller increase of approvals? Well, because instead of posting whatever the average new account posts, they were posting their halloween pictures, roughtly balancing our approvals outComments Approved2645Up ~ 600Bans1280Up ~ 300Includes temp and permaUnbans63Up ~ 30Does not include temp expiringReports Ignored969Up ~ 100Keep reporting stuff!Stickies Made25-Posts and CommentsPosts Locked3-2 moderators had 1 or less action.Despite all the craziness, we keep our steady ratio of 36% of all actions done this month being done by automation. This number just fascinates meReddit admins made no actionsWe recieved no takedown requestsWe will have some cool stuff coming up over the coming months, thanks for reading!
