January 2017 /r/pics transparency report

Hey everyone! This month was exciting to say the least! Sorry this report is a bit late this month. A few things had to get done prior to releasing this.ElectionWith the inaguration of President Donald Trump, things have been, well, uneasy. Our modactions have easily tripled in the days after the inaguration, and most all our mods have been working very hard at enforcing our rules, removing rulebreaking posts and comments, and helping lots of usersBut, lets talk what's on a lot of people's minds. Why did you let the subreddit get flooded with political posts / why do you allow politicsI'll preface this by saying that, yes, whether we should allow politics or not is a little controversial, and we made a lot of people unhappy lately. For that, we do apologize. However, there are a few reasons politically charged posts were not removed. I'll expand on each reason below, after listing them all. There are not many places for them to goWe generally encourage topical event related posting/r/pics has always been dominated by waxing and waning trendsWe don't like to make rule changes in the middle of said trendsSo, lets expand on each one./r/pics is a catch all, we don't direct people to post in more focused subs, but thats often what happens. Doing some preliminay research, if we were to filter these posts, there would really be no active community for these images to go. We reached out to a few different policially based subreddits about some kind of partnership, megathread esque setup, but none were interested, for understandable reasons. We wouldn't want to remove a certain type of image, and then have no where for them to go. This doesn't stop us from banning anything, but its a big consideration.Related to number 3 - /r/pics always thrives during notable topical events, be it a natural disaster, war, pop culture, etc..This was not an exception to this, and was the kind of posting we generally encourageTrends make /r/pics what it is. Cabshots, tools, political signs. Some more well recieved than others. Our general stance is that we don't make new rules or guidelines becaues of a trend. The posting will die down (as it has) with due time, there is nothing wrong with having a topic here and there. Not really a lot to expand upon here, but right in the middle of a big trend is just a bad time to push out rulechanges. So, none of these are reasons why we can't, but reasons why we didn't - I'm not looking to make excuses, just explain to you our line of thought, and why we did what we did.You still have the options to filter out the posts you don't want to see, and we have 5 new moderators I'll talk about shortly that will be helping make sure every post gets the tag it needs.New moderatorsWe added five new moderators just a few days ago. This concludes our Winter 2016 search. If you didn't make it, don't worry, apply next time to be considered again. We added:/u/xRaw-HD//u/elfa82//u/Peter_Mansbrick//u/MediocreGimp//u/Red_Eye_Stone/When we look for moderators, we look for stability, kindness, impartality, and more. Thank you to all who appliedStatsCategoryDataDifferenceCommentTotal Actions53990Up ~1300013,000 more actions than usual. Thanks, inagurationSubmission Removals16309Up ~1000Small increase here, most new actions were lots, and lots of comment removals. People get worked up over politics, who knew.Comment Removals11399Up ~2500Not as many up as I thought, here. Still more than enough!Posts Approved5472Up ~2000This one is a doozy, and the first time It's raised over 3000. Which means a lot of posts were reported, and approved.Comments Approved6007Up ~3000Literally double the normal, again, lots of reported comments, that we approved.Bans1331Down ~20Includes temp and perma - Less? Good job team.Unbans158Up ~30Does not include temp bans expiringReports Ignored2517Up ~1300Keep reporting stuff !! - Much, much higher than usual since people tend to report things that don't align with their political views.Stickies Made61-Posts and CommentsPosts Locked8-Exactly the same as the month before, meaning we are avoiding locking where possible, even under some crazy circumstancesThe rest of our actions came from things like wiki edits (internal tools), distinguishing comments, and more. A lot lot lot of time was spent in the queue, and I am very proud of the moderators we have.2 moderators had 1 or less action24% of all actions were automated (A major decline, which really shows from the numbers above. Many things that happened this month were un-automatable)Reddit admins made 0 actions this month. No takedown requests.
