Hong Kong/China Megathread
As many people are aware, a pro-democracy demonstration has been taking place in Hong Kong. It was prompted when a man from the region was accused of strangling his pregnant girlfriend while in Taiwan. After this individual fled back to Hong Kong – which does not have an extradition treaty with Taiwan – the government seized the opportunity to propose amendments which would allow extraditions to other countries, China included. This has prompted concern that the Chinese government would exploit the amendments, which would apply retroactively. As such, many political refugees – including critics of China – would become vulnerable again. In response to these fears, citizens of Hong Kong have mounted an ongoing protest, which is (at the time of this writing) entering its thirteenth week. While the bill in question has been indefinitely suspended, the demand is for it to be permanently dismissed. There are also four other demands:- The government officially retracts its use of the word "riot" to describe the protests.- Police release all demonstrators who have been arrested, dropping any charges against them.- The government allows for an independent inquiry into the Hong Kong police.- Legitimate universal suffrage. This is obviously a pivotal time for both the region and the world. However, it is not the only important event taking place. Like it says in our rules, history can happen in a day, so as we continue to support Hong Kong's citizens in their fight for true democracy, pictures pertaining to the protests will be kept to this sticked megathread. Exceptions to this may be made for images of particular importance, but for the time being, our hope is to bring these struggles to light while allowing /r/Pics to remain the catch-all subreddit that it is intended to be.
